| Resumo | In vineyards, leaf area is essential for quality grapes production, however there are few methods to quantify this variable in the cycle. Remote sensors can provide information about the vegetation development. The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), obtained by ground-based remote sensor, with the vine leaf area in the Serra Gaucha region, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. For this, 20 plants in two ''Chardonnay'' vineyards were monitored (September 2015 to May 2016) in Veranópolis. NDVI data were obtained with active ground-based remote sensor Greenseeker positioned above the canopy. Vine leaf area was estimated by non-destructive method based on linear measures of leaf blade. The relationship between NDVI and number of leaves per branches, leaf area (cm2), total plant leaf area (m2) and leaf area index (LAI) was established through regression models. The NDVI profiles indicated temporal variability of the vegetation index in the cycle (of 0.47 to 0.81), consistent with the leaf area variability in the vineyards due the phenology and management (pruning). NDVI was positive and non-linear correlated with the number of leaves per branches (R2 = 0.74), total plant leaf area (R2 = 0.63) and IAF (R2 = 0.54). The results indicate that NDVI can be use to monitoring and estimate vine leaf area. Greenseeker is a practical, objective and friendly remote sensor for a non-destructive measurement of leaf area in Chardonnay vineyards. |
